If you haven’t read this hugely hyped summer book, beware that there are a few content warnings: car crash, cancer, addiction, heavy grief, and death of a parent. While I know it wasn’t the most important part of the story, I love a good love story. I felt like the romance could’ve been fleshed out a little more.The ending – it was absolutely tied up!.The heartbreaking portrayal of grief felt personal and real.Indeed, author Steven Rowley offers the perfect mix of snorts and sobs here. Don’t be surprised, either, if you spend your vacation racing to reach the ending you think’s coming and you’re wrong. The kids – they captured my heart! They were so sweet and lovely. This novel is simply as charming as they come and don’t be surprised if you can almost hear your favorite actors as any of the characters here.The banter – GUP was just hilarious and dry.Here are 4 things I loved about this book: This is my first read by Stephen Rowley and after my heart recovers from the emotional rollercoaster that was this book, I plan to pick up Lily and the Octopus. The wit and charm kept me laughing and wishing that GUP was a real person I could have a convo with. The Guncle was a lovely heartwarming story that explores grief, heartache, new love, and so much more. Rowley, also the author of Lily and the Octopus and. The Guncle was an NPR Book of the Year and a Goodreads Choice Award finalist.
